And amidst this complex situation, some Canadians are ready to step in and offer their expertise, if only they're given the chance.
A Golden Opportunity or a Recipe for Disaster?
When news broke of a potential regime change in Venezuela, Barry Blacklock, a Calgarian with deep roots in the country, sprang into action. He began coordinating a group of companies eager to invest and bring much-needed equipment to Venezuela's oil sector. But here's where it gets controversial: is it wise to jump into such a volatile situation?
Venezuela's oilfields have been neglected for decades due to government corruption and control. As Blacklock puts it, "A lot of the equipment has been stolen or left to deteriorate. It will all have to be replaced." But for foreign companies, especially those in Alberta with experience in heavy oil, there's potential for significant profit.
Amit Mankekar, a consultant with operations in Canada and Colombia, believes Alberta has a lot to offer Venezuela in terms of advanced technologies that the country has missed out on. Adam Waterous, executive chair of Strathcona Resources, even went so far as to say he'd quickly assemble a team to go to Venezuela if asked.
However, the challenges are numerous. An unstable government, unclear U.S. involvement, and the risk of having assets seized, as ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods pointed out, are all major concerns. Pedro Pereira-Almao, a former University of Calgary professor, describes Venezuela as a failed nation, questioning the safety of Canadians working there.
And this is the part most people miss: any increase in Venezuela's oil production could directly compete with heavy oil exports from Western Canada, especially to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Blacklock acknowledges the mixed feelings about this business opportunity, knowing that Venezuelan oil entering the market could take away market share from Canadian companies.
