Venezuela Live Updates: Cuban President's Response to US Actions and Threats
The Cuban President, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, has issued a strong statement in response to President Donald Trump's recent actions and threats against Venezuela and Cuba. In a social media post, Díaz-Canel Bermúdez emphasized that the United States has no moral authority to point fingers at Cuba, especially regarding human lives and trade relations.
He stated, 'Cuba is a free, independent, and sovereign nation. No one dictates what we do. Cuba does not aggress; it is aggressed upon by the United States for 66 years, and it does not threaten; it prepares, ready to defend the Homeland to the last drop of blood.'
This statement comes in the wake of the U.S. military operation in Venezuela, where the deposed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured by U.S. forces. President Trump has indicated that the U.S. will 'run' Venezuela for an unspecified period, and has also issued threats against Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez further supported this stance, stating that Cuba has the right to import fuel and develop trade relations without interference from the U.S. unilateral measures.
President Trump's social media posts have been critical of Cuba, suggesting that the country should make a deal with the U.S. before it's 'too late.' This follows Trump's threats to cut off oil and financial support to Cuba, similar to the actions taken against Venezuela.
However, the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reacted to the U.S. State Department's security alert, denying any risk and asserting that Venezuela is in a state of calm, peace, and stability. The ministry's statement also emphasized the country's commitment to peace and institutional stability.
The situation in Venezuela remains uncertain, with the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stating that it's 'too soon to say' when elections could be held. The U.S. has not provided a clear timeline for the transition of power, and the interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez has been sworn in to lead the country during this period.
