Get ready for some intense drama as Silent Witness star Emilia Fox hints at a challenging journey for Nikki and Jack in the upcoming series!
In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Emilia revealed that the beloved couple, Dr. Nikki Alexander and her husband, forensic scientist Jack Hodgson, will face some serious difficulties that will test their relationship to the core.
The new series, which premiered last night, sees Nikki and Jack relocate from London to Birmingham, where they take on a high-profile murder case at the Sir William Bowman Centre of Excellence. As the series unfolds over ten gripping episodes, the duo continues to navigate Birmingham's darkest crime scenes, but it's Jack's own past that lands him in hot water, dragging Nikki into a situation Emilia describes as 'of his own making.'
"They are each other's strength, but it makes them vulnerable," Emilia explains. "In this series, Jack experiences something that creates a difficulty for both of them, exposing their vulnerability due to their deep love for one another."
With Silent Witness celebrating over 20 years on air, the show has always been renowned for its accurate portrayal of forensic science. However, Emilia, who has portrayed Nikki since 2004, assures fans that the new series delves into uncharted territory, exploring subjects the show has never touched upon before.
"Two stories take the series to places it's never been," she shares, praising returning writer Tim Prager for his work on the show's heart-wrenching disability and care home abuse storyline. "From a research perspective, it's been fascinating, and it's real. Tim has once again tapped into very relevant and topical subjects."
Emilia's dedication to learning about her character's trade is just one of the many reasons why she continues to return to the role year after year, even if it means tackling more challenging scripts.
"I love learning new things," she says. "But I think the writers and expert pathologists enjoy challenging me with harder and harder scientific jargon!"
Silent Witness airs on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
