Get ready for an epic showdown as three formidable rivals from the NFC West division battle it out in the playoffs, with a Super Bowl spot on the line!
In the highly competitive world of the NFL, it's no small feat to emerge as a top team. The 2025 season saw only eight teams finish with 12 or more wins, and remarkably, three of those powerhouses hailed from the same division. Enter the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco 49ers, who made history as the first division to boast three 12-win clubs.
Now, as the Divisional Round of the playoffs unfolds, the NFC bracket is down to just four teams, and three of them are from the mighty NFC West. This scenario has only played out three other times in NFL history, highlighting the dominance of this division.
The NFC West has proven its mettle, and it's highly likely that one of these three rivals will be gracing the Super Bowl stage next month. But which one will it be?
Each of these teams has had its fair share of thrilling encounters this season. Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco all went 1-1 against each other, with some of the most captivating games of the year resulting from these matchups. Take, for instance, San Francisco's overtime victory over Los Angeles with a backup quarterback at the helm, or the Rams' narrow win over the Seahawks, where Seattle's field goal attempt fell short.
These teams are evenly matched, and on any given week, the outcome could swing in favor of any one of them.
Seattle enters the playoffs as the top seed in the NFC, largely due to their formidable defense, which held opponents to a league-low 17.2 points per game. The Seahawks, under the guidance of defensive specialist Mike Macdonald, boast a robust front and an agile back end. With four players recording at least six sacks and two others with four interceptions, their defense is a force to be reckoned with.
However, Seattle may need to rely heavily on this defense as their quarterback, Sam Darnold, is nursing an oblique injury. His status for the upcoming game against San Francisco on Saturday is uncertain, and even if he plays, he has yet to prove himself in the playoffs. Last year, making his postseason debut with the Minnesota Vikings, Darnold struggled, with two turnovers and nine sacks. The team that gave him the most trouble? None other than the Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams' defense has been just as aggressive this season, but their offense is what sets them apart. Led by coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles averaged more yards and points than any other team. Stafford is a strong contender for the MVP award, but his health is a concern. He suffered a sprained index finger on his throwing hand during the Wild Card round of the playoffs last week, and he'll also be celebrating his 38th birthday the day before the Super Bowl.
The San Francisco 49ers, meanwhile, have their fair share of injury woes. They recently lost tight end George Kittle to a torn Achilles, and three other key players are not at their peak. Running back Christian McCaffrey has been hampered by a back injury, Trent Williams, the team's best offensive lineman, is dealing with a hamstring issue, and linebacker Fred Warner has been out since October with a fractured and dislocated ankle. Warner has hinted at a possible return this week.
Additionally, San Francisco had to start backup quarterback Mac Jones for eight games earlier in the season while their franchise quarterback, Brock Purdy, recovered from a toe injury.
Despite these challenges, coach Kyle Shanahan has steered the 49ers into the playoffs, and this team has a history of making the most of their postseason opportunities. Since 2011, San Francisco has reached the playoffs eight times, advancing to at least the NFC Championship game on seven of those occasions.
On Saturday, San Francisco will face Seattle, aiming to keep their impressive playoff streak alive. The Rams will take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Predicting these games is no easy feat, but one thing is certain: there's a good chance the NFC Championship next week will be an all-NFC West affair.
