Researchers have unveiled a promising new material that may provide an additional path to generate cleaner energy more cheaply.
In a study published in Waste and Biomass Valorization, the key development centers on 3D cellulose aerogels—lightweight, plant-derived structures that can transform sunlight into steam.
The work by Pham Tien Thanh and Tran Thi Viet Ha points to a future where solar-powered steam generation becomes more accessible, affordable, and scalable, expanding opportunities for cleaner energy systems.
Solar steam generation—using sunlight to produce steam—offers a meaningful way to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Historically, these setups have been costly and energy-intensive to manufacture, limiting adoption by households and smaller communities.
Cellulose aerogels could shift that paradigm. Derived from plant fibers, these materials are biodegradable and excel at trapping heat while absorbing light. Their interconnected 3D porous network enhances efficiency, enabling substantial steam production with relatively little sunlight.
If production scales up, the technology could lower household water heating costs and reduce operating expenses for businesses. It could also improve industrial processes by reducing pollution, contributing to better environmental and public health outcomes.
Another advantage is sustainability in manufacturing. Cellulose aerogels start from an abundant, renewable resource—plant-based cellulose—and can be produced using low-energy, non-toxic methods. This makes large-scale manufacturing feasible with minimal environmental impact. Moreover, these aerogels hold promise for additional applications, including water purification and pollutant absorption.
According to the researchers, this combination of multifunctionality, low cost, and eco-friendly fabrication positions black cellulose aerogels as innovative, scalable solutions for a range of environmental challenges.
Despite not yet being available to consumers, scientists are actively pursuing ways to unlock the full potential of this material.
