Jack Semple's Inspiring Journey: From Brain Surgery to Recovery (2026)

In a remarkable turn of events, Regina's own Jack Semple, an acclaimed singer-songwriter and Juno award winner, recently underwent emergency brain surgery to remove a tumor. Now on the path to recovery, he is learning to walk again after seeking treatment at the notable Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, as he faced an unacceptably long wait for a diagnosis back home in Canada.

Jack Semple's journey began last July when he began experiencing troubling symptoms that left him puzzled about their origin. "I had a sore back, and I initially thought it was arthritis or something similar, but things took a turn for the worse. My balance deteriorated, my coordination was off, and my left hand started acting oddly," Semple shared during an interview with The 306 host Peter Mills earlier this week.

After undergoing emergency surgery to remove the brain tumor, Semple is now focused on regaining his mobility. He described how, after consulting with Canadian healthcare professionals, he faced a daunting wait time of a year and a half for a diagnosis—a delay that he believes could have been fatal.

Despite not having insurance coverage in the United States, Semple's family made the crucial decision to take him to the Mayo Clinic, where testing commenced immediately. "I've got family support, which I'm incredibly grateful for. I'm one of the lucky ones, but this whole ordeal is very costly," he acknowledged.

Following an MRI, doctors identified the tumor in the 58-year-old's brain, prompting them to take swift action. Reflecting on the moment he learned the nature of his condition, Semple stated, "When I found out it was just a tumor, I felt a sense of relief. There could have been much more terrifying possibilities. The brilliant surgeons informed me they could safely remove it, but they were clear about the risks involved."

In a positive sign post-surgery, Semple reported that he could move his left arm and leg just a few hours after the operation, which he considered a promising indicator of his recovery.

Just ten days after the surgery, he delightedly returned to playing his guitar and ukulele, despite feeling a bit out of practice. "I'm feeling great. Honestly, I feel like the luckiest person around! Learning to walk again is tough because you know how to do it, then suddenly... you can't. It's going to be a long road, but I’m determined to get there," Semple expressed, brimming with optimism.

He has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support from his family and is eager to return to performing live as soon as he is able. Semple boasts multiple Western Canadian Music Awards and claimed a Juno award in 1991, gaining further acclaim the next year when he won MuchMusic’s Guitar Wars contest.

"All I need to do is appreciate the wonderful gifts in my life, and everything will turn out alright... I might be back on stage by fall, but likely not before that," he concluded, looking forward to the future and the possibility of resuming his musical career.
