Seven Days in the Karoo: An Unforgettable Gravel Burn Adventure
The Nedbank Gravel Burn: A Test of Endurance and Resilience
When Cape Epic founder Kevin Vermaak invited me to the inaugural Gravel Burn, I was initially hesitant. After three unsuccessful attempts at finishing the Cape Epic, the idea of another grueling South African race seemed daunting. But Vermaak's vision was different: a seven-day, 800-kilometer journey through the Eastern Cape's Great Karoo, a region known for its vast, rugged beauty. I decided to take the plunge, enlisting my trusted companions, Allan 'Alby' Iacuone and Mark O'Hare.
Preparing for the Unknown
Doubts lingered as we booked flights and solidified plans. After a two-year hiatus from competitive cycling, I questioned my ability to endure the rigors of the race. Would I succumb to illness in the heart of South Africa? Could I sacrifice my newfound comfort for the thrill of the ride? Yet, something about the challenge beckoned, and I found myself eager to embark on this extraordinary adventure.
Diving Back into Training
In the months leading up to the event, I immersed myself in the world of performance. I hired coach Neal Henderson and devoured podcasts by Ronan, delving into the intricacies of tire pressure, nutrition, aerodynamics, and more. Every detail mattered, and I aimed to master them all. My goal was singular: to reach the starting line, having prepared as thoroughly as possible.
The Gravel Burn Unveiled
Two days before the start, we arrived in Knysna, our training complete. The opening stage of the Gravel Burn lived up to its name, offering a baptism by fire. The rain poured relentlessly, making it feel like a biblical deluge. We were drenched as we ventured onto the gravel roads, our bikes and bodies coated in dirt and grit. The pace was relentless, fueled by the energy of the riders and their ambitions.
A Journey of Connection and Discovery
As I navigated the course, I reconnected with old racing buddies and made new friends. The final climb was a moment of revelation, where I finally looked up and witnessed the breathtaking views. It was a reminder to embrace the beauty of life, a lesson inspired by Ferris Bueller's famous quote. Back at camp, I stood in awe, covered in sand and mud, realizing that sometimes, getting clean is the first step towards renewal.
Overcoming Challenges and Triumphs
The race presented its fair share of obstacles, from mechanical issues to the relentless pace. Yet, we persevered, supported by the dedicated Specialized support crew and the unsung heroes of the bike washers. Despite a set of brake pads disintegrating in a single stage, we adapted and continued, showcasing our resilience. The Gravel Burn became a testament to our determination, proving that sometimes, the journey is the destination itself.
