Cycling from UK to Thailand: Wild Dogs, Tigers, and a Broken Collarbone | Olly's Epic Adventure (2026)

A thrilling tale of adventure awaits as we delve into the story of Olly Hargreaves, a brave cyclist from Cheshire, whose journey from the UK to Thailand was far from ordinary.

Olly's eight-month odyssey began in April 2025, inspired by his father's own epic cycle journey from the UK to Australia in the 1980s. With just his bike, tent, and camping stove, Olly set off on a path less traveled, braving the elements and encountering unique challenges along the way.

But here's where it gets controversial... Olly's journey took him through tiger-infested jungles and encounters with giant dogs, but it was a simple pothole in Nepal that ultimately brought him down, resulting in a broken collarbone just days before his anticipated finish line.

Olly's journey began in Europe, cycling through France, Germany, Austria, and Croatia. He was joined by a friend in Montenegro, and together they ventured through Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey, where they faced wild dog chases, with Olly describing the local Kangal dogs as "menacing and terrifying" due to their size and spiky collars.

After some solo cycling through central Turkey, Olly was joined by his girlfriend, Ellie, in Cappadocia, where he experienced his first hotel stay on the trip. The pair then navigated closed borders, catching flights and trains to reach Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

In August, Olly cycled through Afghanistan and arrived early to surprise his father in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. However, the reunion was short-lived as Olly's dad developed High-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), forcing him to return home.

Olly continued his journey alone, cycling through Kyrgyzstan and waiting for two friends he had met earlier. Together, they braved freezing temperatures, sleeping in tents and warming themselves by the fire.

The trio then flew to India, where they encountered a unique challenge - frequent collisions with vehicles. Olly humorously recalls, "We ended up with a tally chart of who'd been crashed into and by what."

As they continued through Nepal, Olly and his companions had to be vigilant, keeping an eye out for tigers, elephants, and rhinos. It was during their trek along the Annapurna Circuit that Olly's journey took an unexpected turn, resulting in a broken collarbone.

And this is the part most people miss... Despite the setback, Olly and his mother, who had flown out to meet him, made the most of their time in Nepal, doing smaller treks and creating memorable experiences.

Olly's journey eventually led him to Bangkok, where he reunited with Ellie, and the couple continued their adventure through northern Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

In his own words, Olly reflects, "If something's happened that you can't change, being in a bad mood isn't going to make it better." He found the silver lining in his injury, describing it as an "eventful end" to his trip, and a memorable experience at that.

So, what do you think? Is Olly's positive outlook on his journey inspiring, or do you think he could have handled the challenges differently? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
