ByHeart Infant Formula Recall: What Parents Need to Know | FDA Investigation Update (2025)

A shocking revelation has emerged, highlighting a potential threat to our youngest and most vulnerable. Infant botulism, a rare yet deadly illness, has sparked a broader investigation by the FDA, leading to a voluntary recall of two batches of ByHeart infant formula.

Infant botulism is a serious condition caused by the ingestion of Clostridium botulinum spores, which then colonize the infant's intestinal tract. This can lead to the production of botulinum neurotoxins, posing a significant risk to the health of infants. Affected infants may exhibit a range of symptoms, including constipation, poor feeding, drooping eyelids, sluggish pupils, low muscle tone, and difficulty swallowing. In severe cases, it can even lead to respiratory issues and arrest.

The FDA's investigation is ongoing, and while no direct link has been established between infant formula and these cases, ByHeart is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of infants.

ByHeart, a leading baby nutrition company, received notification from the FDA on November 7, 2025, about an estimated 83 cases of infant botulism reported nationwide since August 2025. Notably, 13 of these infants had been fed ByHeart formula at some point. However, the FDA has not confirmed a direct connection between any infant formula and these cases, and there is no historical evidence of infant formula causing infant botulism.

But here's where it gets controversial... Botulism is extremely rare in dairy products and infant formula, typically occurring naturally in environmental sources like soil, certain vegetables, and dust. ByHeart, committed to the highest standards of product testing and safety, has not detected any contaminants in their products.

Mia Funt, Co-Founder and President of ByHeart, emphasized, "The safety and well-being of every infant using our formula is our top priority. We take potential safety concerns very seriously and act swiftly to protect families. As parents ourselves, we understand the worry this news may cause. This voluntary recall is a cautious step, reflecting our commitment to transparency and safety for babies and their parents."

And this is the part most people miss... While no testing by ByHeart or regulatory agencies has confirmed the presence of Clostridium botulinum spores or toxin in their products, ByHeart is taking a proactive approach to remove any potential risk, ensuring the highest level of safety for infants.

The voluntary recall applies to two specific batches of ByHeart infant formula, with batch codes 251261P2 and 251131P2, both with a "Use by" date of December 1, 2026. Consumers who have purchased these batches are advised to immediately stop using the formula and dispose of it. ByHeart will replace these cans and provide two additional cans at no cost.

If your infant is experiencing symptoms related to infant botulism, seek medical attention immediately. You can also report any illnesses or adverse events to the FDA using the provided contact information or by completing an electronic or paper Voluntary MedWatch form.
