Britain's New 850kg Sports Car: Production Boost for Wells Motor Cars (2026)

Get ready for a thrilling ride as the automotive world gears up for the mass production of a British masterpiece! The Vertige, a sleek and powerful sports car, is about to hit the roads in greater numbers, and it's causing quite a stir.

Based in Warwickshire, Wells Motor Cars is gearing up to significantly increase the production of their highly anticipated Vertige. This lightweight coupé, weighing just 850kg, boasts an impressive 250bhp. The company aims to manufacture approximately 12 cars this year, with plans to double production in 2027.

The Vertige's journey began at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it was unveiled as the ultimate sports car envisioned by founder Robin Wells. A limited run of Founders Edition cars commenced production in 2023.

But here's where the story gets intriguing: the Vertige's design was locked in before any engineering work commenced. Engineer Robin Hall, with an impressive resume including the Mika Meon electric buggy and stints at Mini and JLR, then crafted a chassis to suit its compact size.

Wells envisioned the Vertige as not just a beauty to behold but also a joy to drive and own. This philosophy led to a straightforward yet effective powerplant choice: the reliable Ford Duratec four-cylinder engine, tuned to deliver 208bhp in its standard form.

And this is the part most enthusiasts will love: an R-specification variant with a whopping 250bhp has been introduced, resulting in a breathtaking power-to-weight ratio of 212.5bhp per tonne!

The interior is a blend of classic and modern, featuring traditional clocks, a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, and a plethora of customization options for finishes and upholstery.

Robin Wells passionately describes his creation, saying, "Imagine the raw thrill of driving a [Caterham] Seven or similar lightweight cars, but with added stability and modern conveniences. It's like playing a beautifully crafted piano, where the experience is both exhilarating and refined."

He further explains his design philosophy, stating, "I wanted to create a simple, driver-focused vehicle because modern cars often overwhelm with complex menus and settings. The Vertige offers a peaceful and intuitive driving experience, which I believe is the new definition of luxury."

But is simplicity in modern cars a step forward or a step back? Do you agree that peace of mind and quietness should be the new luxury in automotive design?
